Purpose
Neck lymph node metastasis is associated with an increased risk of tumor recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Although there is possibility of node metastasis in clinically node-negative (cN0) PTC, the role of prophylactic central neck dissection (PCND) and the extent of thyroidectomy in these patients is controversial. In this study, we investigated the prognosis of patients with cN0 PTC and pathologically confirmed pathologic lymph node metastasis (pN1a) after PCND.
Method
We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent thyroid surgery with PCND for the treatment of PTC between April 2004 and February 2016. Patients who confirmed as pN1a and followed for more than 1 year were included. Clinicopathologic data were reviewed and local recurrence rate according to the treatment of PTC was analyzed.
Result
