Purpose
Although papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is known for its excellent prognosis, central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is common, which can lead to high local recurrence rates. Intraoperative pathologic evaluation (IOPE) was adopted for prediction of CLNM and determination of surgical extent. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of IOPE and risk factors for CLNM in unilateral PTC.
Method
The study was investigated in a retrospective analysis of 206 unilateral PTC patients diagnosed with Bethesda V or VI by fine needle aspiration cytology at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1 and December 31, 2017. Clinicopathologic characteristics, accuracy of IOPE compared with permanent pathology and risk factors for CLN metastasis were analyzed.
Results
