This paper is a study for interdisciplinary dialogue between art and biblical theology using the commentary methodology of ‘Aesthetic Biblical Interpretation.’ First, it examines how the textual understanding of this ‘Baptism of Jesus’ was derived from the artist’s point of view in Unbo Kim Ki-Chang’s work, 〈Baptized by John〉. The iconographic methodology was applied to the interpretation of his Korean-style painting. The next step conducts an exegetical study of the text for the “Baptism of Jesus” in Matthew 3 and the “Old Testament-related texts” as its background, using the result of the interpretation of Unbo’s work as a clue.
The main New Testament focus text of this paper is Matthew 3:13-17. Unbo adopted this text as a background text linked to the work 〈Baptized by John〉. Accordingly, the current study of ‘Aesthetic Biblical Interpretation’ begins with a discussion of this text. In this process, through analyzing and comparing the New Testament text in relation to the pertinent Old Testament texts as its background, this study proposes the “priest commitment ceremony” (Lev. 8) as the Old Testament background for the “Baptism of Jesus.”
