Forensic anthropologists often encounter a challenge where multiple human skeletal remains are recovered in a commingled state. Since unsuccessful segregation of the commingled remains compromises the accuracy of subsequent forensic analyses, much effort has been made to accurately segregate commingled remains. Pair-matching is one of the popular segregation methods where the shape and size of paired bones are compared. The idea behind the method is that the differences in the shape and size of paired bones within an individual should be smaller than between individuals. Traditional pair-matching is conducted using naked eyes; however, it has been pointed out that the accuracy of the visual pair-matching likely depends on the researchers’ personal experiences significantly. The purpose of this research is to develop a new Korean-specific pair-matching method by assessing the shape and size discrepancies between paired bones based on three-dimensional images.
Computed tomography (CT) images of the lower limb bones from 106 Korean individuals (55 females, 51 males) were obtained from the Digital Korean project (http://dk.kisti.re.kr/). The mean ages are 50.9 years (SD = 9.8 years) and 53.9 years (SD = 8.1 years) for males and females, respectively. After mirroring all left bones, each of the mirrored left bones was overlapped with the corresponding right bones from the same individuals.
