Cancer remains a major burden of disease worldwide, and ranks the second most common cause of death following cardiovascular disease in many countries although cancer death rates have been decreasing. The increasing knowledge of molecular and tumor biology has notably changed cancer therapy paradigms during the past 15 years. The essential premise of genotype-based precision oncology is that tumor-specific molecular abnormalities can be targeted with accurate, effective and potentially less-toxic therapies. Early diagnosis of cancer, differentiation of cancer from treatment changes, methods of evaluating and predicting therapeutic responses, and toxicities of cancer treatments are major clinical problems. Cancer immunology, genetics, metabolism as well as computational oncology and developmental biology are popular topics of recent cancer research.
