Shakespeare and Milton are the two of the greatest of all the poets of English literature and their sonnets are written after the prevailing English Renaissance fashion and deal with the theme of love revolving around loving ones. Shakespeare and Milton both address topics of love in their respective sonnets, but do so in different ways. The aspects of love of Shakespeare’s sonnets are mostly divided into two, developing in the sonnets about Fair Youth is spiritual and portraying Dark Lady is physical or sensual. The aspect of love in Milton’s sonnet is a kind of religious personality seeking immutable values in the vicissitudes of the temporal world. They employ different structural techniques and subjects within the realm of love. Shakespeare uses the English form, while Milton follows the Italian form.
The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative study of the theme of love in the sonnets of Shakespeare and Milton. Fair Youth in Shakespeare’s first aspect of love is almost similar to the lover of Milton’s sonnets. However, unlike Shakespeare, Milton demonstrate how desire can foster a deeper love between fellow human beings and a deeper love for God in some sonnets.
