In advanced conversation classes, learners often bring problematic data when they prepare data to support their opinion. Therefore it is necessary to cultivate statistical literacy even in Japanese classes. In this paper, we report practices in advanced conversation classes aimed at cultivation of statistical literacy. From the results of the questionnaire after practices, we found that more than 80% of learners realized changes in their views on the data. In particular, they realized the gullibility, existence of problems and its influence. They also reflected on their past attitudes of blindly accepting data, and they started to doubt the data more than before. In addition, learners realized some improvement on critical thinking of statistical literacy. Statistical literacy is closely related to the cultivation of logical thinking and critical thinking, and is also the ability that is required today of ordinary citizens living in the information society. Therefore, if statistical literacy can be cultivated in Japanese classes, it serves a double purpose. Although the practices of this paper are experimental trials, there seems to be no practice report aimed at cultivation of statistical literacy in the field of Japanese language education. Hence the suggestions in this paper can contribute to Japanese language education.
