The paper aims to investigate and clarify the conceptual connections among art, education and culture, which have been vague and confused in the arts education policy in Korea. The confusion was always the source of troubles for arts education practitioners in Korea since it tends to lead them into totally different approaches to arts education in their practices. In doing so, the paper first critically examines three commonly received approaches to arts education for the last few decades: education for the sake of arts, education through arts, education about arts, to see if the way each approach views the conceptual relation between arts and education can be valid for contemporary arts education today. Second, it examines two distinctive thinkers’ philosophical views on arts, John Dewey’s and Gilles Deleuze’s, to see if they can provide better concepts of the relation between arts and education where arts-experience is itself educative. Finally, the paper boldly attempts to show how art, education and culture can be conceptually connected in such a way as to give a direction on how arts education is to be delivered in the practice. This suggestion is supposed to show how arts education can be a way of awakening aesthetic experiences in the learner, where a principle of arts or artistic spirit plays a central role in the growth of learners’ being. In conclusion, the paper proposes a new way of framing arts education in Korea: education in arts, arts in education, and arts education in society. These are all supposed to be governed by principles of arts or artistic spirit in their educational approaches because doing arts are the very way of being educative. Keywords: Philosophy
