This paper makes a detailed study of the “De” sentence with “VO” as modal complement, and draws the following conclusions. a. There are many semantic and structural types of “VO” with noun objects. Some of them are free to do modal complements, some are limited, and some can’t do it at all. b. Although some “VO” with verb objects can also be used as modal complements, due to more structural and semantic constraints, quite a number of predicate object “VO” are difficult to be used as modal complements. Therefore, it can be said that it is a structure with relatively low degree of freedom as a modal complement. c. “VO” is a complement of the predicate verb or adjective in form, but it can be related to different elements in the sentence in semantics, showing the diversity of semantic direction. d. The “De” sentence with “VO” modal complement is not restricted by tense. The action or character expressed by the predicate verb or adjective in a sentence may have occurred or realized, or has not yet occurred, or will occur or exist in the future. e. In the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, it is necessary to specify the types and characteristics of “VO” which can act as modal complement and various restrictive factors, correct the one-sided and even wrong understanding in the past, so as to improve students’ understanding and application ability of modal complement, and then effectively improve the teaching effect of “De” sentence.
