Purpose: This paper investigates, from a critical acceptance perspective, the 5 tenets that have collectively encompassed the concept of Taekwondo spirit. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the limitations and strengths of the 5 tenets in detail, then to supplement their shortcomings and valorize their strengths, and finally contribute to the establishment of a universal and valid conceptualization of Taekwondo spirit. Method: A philosophical analysis was adopted as the research method. The detailed research issues include: first, how the 5 tenets were conceived, and their origins; second, the specifics of the 5 tenets; and third, the strengths and limitations of the 5 tenets in terms of critical acceptance. Conclusion: This paper analyzes the strengths and limitations of the 5 tenets in terms of critical acceptance and draws the following conclusions. The strengths of the 5 tenets are their popularity, simplicity, and contextual descriptions in Taekwondo. On the other hand, the limitations of the 5 tenets were identified as follows. First, There was no justifiable ideology of Taekwondo. Second, the conceptual breadth of the 5 tenets was narrowly focused only on social virtues and mental toughness. Third, terms such as courtesy and integrity have semantic connectivity similarity and redundancy. Fourth, as shown in the tenet of indomitable spirit, Choi Hong-Hi, who was a military general at the time, focused on factors of mental toughness based on his own value judgment.
