Two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channels are a diverse family of K<SUP>+</SUP> selective ion channels that contribute to background currents in excitable and non-excitable tissues, but the role of K2P channels in adipogenesis is largely unknown. We found that among K2P channels, KCNK2 (also known as TREK-1) is predominantly expressed in preadipocytes and downregulated during insulin-induced differentiation, which causes the reduction of K<SUP>+</SUP> currents and the increase of resting membrane potentials (RMP) of adipocytes.
