Gangwon-do (GWD) has complex topography and land-surface characteristics due to its location to the East Sea and the Taebaek Mountain range. This coastal location and rugged terrain can amplify snowfall mechanisms, which makes it difficult to predict the amount and location accurately. This study compares two different methods in assimilating radar data and analyze snowfall prediction results. The two methods that are compared are, a) three dimensional variational (3D-Var) and b) a Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) data assimilation (DA). 3D-Var considers only the covariance of the climatic background error, but LETKF can consider model errors changing with time/space.
