The studies that have been conducted on religious textbooks so far imply that more interest in textbook research, development of various research topics, and research not limited to individual religions are needed. In accordance with this implication, the purpose of this article is to examine the places of religious textbooks and to identify and improve problems arising from the production and management of textbooks there. According to this study, first, the place of religious textbooks can be discussed in three positions-national level curriculum, textbook system, and social environment. In these positions, religious textbooks have three meanings - reflective education for religious phenomenon arising from the characteristics of liberal education, teaching and learning in public spaces due to the characteristics of recognized books, and the balanced value of tolerance and justice required in the characteristics of multireligious and multicultural society. Second, with regard to the production of religious textbooks, religious textbooks share the standards for developing textbooks for pedagogy (especially in curriculum), but in particular, the standards for neutrality of content must be observed. As the scope suggested by the national level curriculum is observed, there are fewer problems that may arise in the composition of the textbook, but the conflict between neutral and apologetic attitudes related to the description of its content can still persist. Third, with regard to the management of religious textbooks, there are various problems that the situation of schools dealing with textbooks is different, and that the Office of Education consistently raises errors in expression and notation of textbooks. The request sometimes includes advocacy for a particular religion. To solve these problems, it is necessary to investigate the use of religious textbooks by school and to improve the system for requesting revisions by the Ministry of Education and Office of Education. This study is expected to serve as an opportunity to connect the place of religious textbooks with its production and management. In the future, a number of efforts will be required to ensure that religious textbooks, like other textbooks, have the value to help students in all schools. The efforts include providing opportunities to reflect on religion-related society in textbooks and reviewing educational turn in the content of textbooks. It goes without saying that the effort entails recognizing the direction of religious education as a reflection on religious phenomena, not as an infusion of specific knowledge or values, and actively cooperating with teachers or researchers of other religions.

종교학교과서에 대한 종래 연구들은 좀 더 많은 관심, 연구 주제의 다양화, 개별 종교를 넘어선 연구 등이 필요하다는 점 을 시사한다. 이에 따라, 이 글의 목적은, 선행연구들의 연장과 확장 차원에서, 종교학교과서의 자리를 규정하고, 그 자리에 서교과서의 제작·관리에서 발생하는 문제들을 파악하는 데에 있다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 첫째, 종교학교과서의 자리는 국가수준 교육과정, 교과서제도, 사회 환경에서 논의될 수 있다. 이에 따르면, 종교학교과서의 자리는 교양교육 특성상 성찰적 종교교육, 인정도서 특성상 공적 공간에서 교수·학습이 가능한 교 육, 그리고 다종교·다문화사회와 관련해 관용과 정의의 균형적 가치를 담게 된다. 둘째, 종교학교과서의 제작과 관련해서는 교육학(특히 교육과정)의 교과용도서 개발 기준을 공유하지만 특히 중립성 문 제에 민감해야 한다. 그리고 교과서의 내용 구성에서는 교육과정이 제시한 범위가 있어 문제가 적지만, 서술 태도에서는 중 립적 태도와 호교론적 태도가 충돌하는 문제가 있다. 셋째, 종교학교과서의 관리와 관련해서는 종교학교과서의 사용 현실이 다양하고 개별 종교의 입장 반영 및 표현·표기에 대한 지속적인 수정 요청이 이루어진다는 문제가 있다. 그 원인은 인정도서심의회 위원의 주관적 구성과 교육부·교육청의 미흡한 제도적 장치에 있다. 이는 종교학교과서의 사용 실태 조사와 교육부·교육청의 교과서 수정제도 개선이 필요하다는 의미이다. 이 연구가 종교학교과서의 자리와 제작·관리를 연결시키는 계기가 되기를 기대한다. 앞으로 종교학교과서가, 다른 교과 서의 경우와 마찬가지로, 모든 학교에 적용되어 모든 학생을 도울 수 있는 가치를 지니려면 여러 노력들이 필요하다. 그 노 력은 교과서를 통해 종교 관련 사회 현실에 대한 성찰 기회를 제공하는 일, 교과서 내용의 교육적 전환을 검토하는 일, 그리 고종교교육의 방향을 특정 지식이나 가치의 주입이 아니라 그에 대한 성찰로 인식하고, 종교가 다른 교사나 연구자와 적극 협조하는 일등이다.
