The purpose of this study is to provide the proper direction for the contents of religion textbooks by examining and evaluating the historical trend of religion textbooks and by analyzing the existing religion textbooks currently in use. As for the historical trend of Christian religion textbooks, the history of their publication from the period prior to the official approval of religious studies by the Korean government to the present day has been examined. This study has found that religions textbooks despite loose government regulation has been devoid of academic freedom and the systematic ambiguity in the area of religious studies is directly reflected in them.
Two religion textbooks Religion and Life and Religion and Living have been evaluated in the following three manners: 1) Observation and evaluation from a comparison between 2009 government curriculum of religions studies (Ministry of Education, Science and Technology 2011-361 and 2011-3) and the contents of the two textbooks. 2) Observation and evaluation of the criteria for the textbook content selection (internal or external criteria). 3) Observation and evaluation of the organizing principle for the textbook content (continuity, sequence, integrity). From the comparison, it was noted that despite an attempt to comply with the government curriculum the religion textbooks did not have the government curriculum content evenly distributed in each chapter. Moreover, they have the dual content structure of religious education and faith education. It was also noted that the textbook contents are determined by external criteria from social factors and the emphasis on the value of religions (internal criteria) has been weakened. Lastly, the principles of continuity, sequence, and integration present in the textbooks are tenuous, if not completely absent.
Such flaws have arisen due to difference in educational philosophy between the Korean government and churches. Clearly, systematic ambiguity negatively impacts the content selection and publication of the textbooks. Thus, this study in conformity to the government curriculum suggests a two-track approach to religion textbook publication depending on the school’s mode of administration (public or private) and religious education equipped with fairness and freedom.
