The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an agent of art from the viewpoint of Kant and its Deleuzian interpretation. Firstly, AI cannot feel emotion itself, so it seems difficult to be an independent artist by making an aesthetic judgment about a beautiful object according to the feelings of pleasure and displeasure. Secondly, AI based on Big data, enabled by the recent exponential growth of computer powers and Machine learning, seems incapable of an artistic agent of creation through agreement between free imagination and indeterminate understanding. Lastly, from the standpoint of Kant’s theory of genius, the nature of AI’s Supervised learning, prevents itself from imposing new rules on art like Kant’s genius, hence it will never be able to be an original artist. Therefore, AI which can be neither an independent artist, nor an original artist, is unlikely to replace mankind in the field of art beyond human ability as an agent of art in the future. Rather, it seems more appropriate to search for a way to effectively utilize AI as an artistic tool to help human creation of art.
