This paper focuses on the possibility of incongruity between the two creative directions in Itsuki Hiroyuki’s “Declaration of Entertainment,” which has had a decisive influence on his novels, and analyzes A Night Under Martial Law (1976). There are two creative directions in the declaration. One is to express his awareness of negative contemporary events. And the other is to deliver his works through the mass media to the public, with compelling stories and catharsis that are essential elements of novels, but somewhat neglected in “pure literature”. In his Historical Mystery series in the 1970s, the incongruity between the two directions is not so noticeable. But in A Night Under Martial Law, it is exposed in the novel’s excessively saturated and diverse axes and viewpoints. It is considered that the writer adopted the methodology of “denki roman” to coexist the numerous axes and viewpoints. His criticism of the Emperor System of Japan and accusation of the country for crushing freedom of individuals, which were reflected in the novel, could have been considered “dangerous” in the Japan at that time. However, his criticism was deflected to the material of “entertainment” to be enjoyed by the public. Therefore, unlike the opinions of the New Left extremists or a writer in Japan, those who shared the same critical mind with Itsuki, A Night Under Martial Law became a bestseller without being repressed in Japan as a “safe entertainment to everyone”. The axes and viewpoints in the novel were later advanced in his other novels and essays. Through this distinctive novel, we can discover and verify the possibility of the incongruity between the two creative directions in the declaration. When the directions do not harmonize, the critical mind of the writer was deflected to converge on “entertainment”. In researching the works of Itsuki Hiroyuki, the above content provides an important point of view.
