The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the life satisfaction of the elderly and to verify the mediating effect of the psychological status. This study used the survey data of the Korean Retirement and Income Study. The elderly are defined as persons aged 65 and above and divided into two groups, those with disabilities and those without disabilities. The results of the analysis are as follows. Firstly, life satisfaction was higher among the elderly without disabilities than among the elderly with disabilities and psychological status was more positive among the elderly without disabilities than the eldery with disabilities. Secondly, among the elderly with disabilities physical health status and psychological health status were significant factors with regard to life satisfaction, while among the elderly without disabilities physical health status, psychological health status, chronic diseases, ADL and IADL were significant factors. Thirdly, psychological health status turned out to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between psychological status and life satisfaction among the elderly with disabilities. Physical health status, psychological health status, chronic diseases and IADL turned out to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between psychological status and life satisfaction among the elderly without disabilities. Based on these findings, this study made some suggestions for the improvement of life satisfaction by focusing on the distinction between the elderly with and without disabilities.
