As the educational affair management in universities is disrupted and non-contact class is extended due to COVID-19, physics students" concerns about dropout have been deepened. Where COVID-19 is yet far from its end and the spread of another epidemic is expected, the study on the dropout of physics students is thought to have an important implication.
This study administered focus group interviews with both physics students and professors and analyzed the results. The students described their feelings about non-contact class as "the class in which the body is comfortable but the mind is uncomfortable", "a person who is smarter than me seems to explain a book, reading it" and "a short clip lecture which may be comfortable but cause losses to me", while the professors also described them as "a fully transformed class system" and "a online class putting much burden on me". Both of them responded that their concerns about dropout were escalated during non-contact class, and that the closing of the department, determined by the universities during the COVID-19 pandemic was a factor accelerating the dropout.
