Purpose: Night shift is nothing new to emergency physicians. In fact, all of them feel stressed about shift work regardless of frequency or duration. The effects of rotating shifts are cumulative, and represent one of the most important reasons physicians leave the specialty. This is the first comprehensive study in Korea which analyzed shift schedules in association with quality of life of emergency physicians. Methods: The 2015 Korean Emergency Physician Survey (KEPS) distributed a questionnaire to its members regarding their shift schedule, status of health, quality of sleep and satisfaction. This survey was performed from August to October 2015 and a total of 189 clinical emergency physicians enrolled. Results: The most common pattern of schedule were rotating, 12-hour shift. Regular schedulers showed better status of health and daytime sleepiness. Fixed day or night schedulers had better quality of sleep. Shorter duration of shifts showed better status of health, quality of sleep and less sleep related problems they reported. Regular 8-hour shift in a fixed manner was most preferred by responders. Meanwhile, schedule satisfaction was more related to frequency of shifts. Conclusion: Status of health and quality of sleep of clinical emergency physicians were influenced by regularity of schedule and duration of shift. But many of us had rotating long duration of shift in an irregular manner because lack of specialty. Considering a mismatch in supply and demand in the field of emergency medicine, we should increase number of staffing first in order to make a better schedule of shifts.
