Middles show varying degrees of acceptability across speakers and also across individual sentences. This paper argues that the acceptability of middle constructions depends on the availability of obtaining the responsibility reading, i.e., inference possibility of some properties of the subject referent which enable or facilitate the activity expressed by the verb. It is because middles are dispositionals which contain a covert possibility modal, and as such, the properties of the subject referent form the basis of the modal evaluation expressed by the predicate and the truth value of the sentence is based on properties of the subject referent. Contexts serve to specify the properties of the subject referent or facilitate inference of the responsibility reading and that is why the acceptability of middles considerably improves through appropriate contextualization. The fact that middles are particularly frequent and productive in advertisements and academic texts can also be accounted for by the constructional meaning of the middle which focuses on inherent properties of the non-agent subject entity.
