In depiction of gender issue in The Canterbury Tale, Chaucer gives voice to two seemingly contradictory perspectives, one an anti-feminist as well as another alternate interrogative one. It is thus that there is an ongoing gender related discourse within Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales; a view of women from a prevailing patriarchic and misogynistic perspective going against a pro-feminist accusations of female subjugation and subversion. Of course, calling The Tales dialectical does not mean that they adhere strictly to the dialectic process in the Hegelian sense. Rather, the The Tales is a work of art and is dialectical only in the sense used by Michael Lieb, that there is an assumption that “Truth is always ‘in the making,’ forever arising dynamically out of the contention of opposing views.” In so doing, I would argue, the two conflicting perspectives from a dialectical structure. Beginning, then, with the exploration of expressions of the dominant patriarchical ideology of female subordination and obedience in “The Knight’s Tale,” The Tales goes on to interrogate and critique the validity of such anti-feminist ideology of female subjugation particularly in connection with “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.”
