This paper diagnoses what problem the moral-agent theories may have. Moral agent-theories try to find out the nature of moral or normative values by focusing on moral agents’ attitude, response, choice, etc. The analysis of agents ‘response is frequently adopted to probe the nature of natural values or things. It is an epistemic approach for metaphysical inquiry. However, the author argues that this method is not effective at all in searching the nature of moral values. For if a behavioral logic that is designed to explain the agent’s behavior is neutral or comprehensive, a specific metaethical position would not be advocated. Neutral or comprehensive logic of moral agents’ behavior can be applied to both the moral realist and moral antirealist. Both of them do not show difference in understanding moral actuality or phenomena. Their difference consists in how to evaluate the nature or the status moral values and norms. So in sponsoring a metaethical position, the discussion of values themselves should be the main topic while that of moral agents should be a subsidiary one, according to the author. The author examines some typical moral-agent theories, such as John Mackie’s “argument from moral motivation,” Moral Phenomenologists’ Sensibility Theory, and a moral-agent theory by Matthew Evans and Nishi Shah, which tries to advocate moral realism. The author concludes that these moral-agent theories hardly achieve their goals because of the reason the author proposed.
