As Emmanuel Levinas scholarship is recently getting more and more enlivened, researchers are trying to come up with the possibility of expanding his thoughts into other fields of humanity studies. The relationship between Levinas’s thoughts and postcolonial literary theory has stood out as one of such possibilities. It seems to be apparent that Levinas’s ethics of Other and the discourse of other theorized in postcolonial theory have a certain common ground. Having these ideas in mind, this study is trying to investigate the question whether the two levels of thoughts can have a possibility to go hand in hand and then elucidate the question of the political in Levinas’s writings from the perspective of postcolonial theory. The conclusion of this study is that although Levinas’s ethics of Other has a strong political implication, we should not confuse the two thoughts because they are two different systems of thought which open their theories in the different horizons. Therefore, even an ambitious attempt to find a common theoretical ground from the two terrains of thought may result in mis-stepping the stones.
