The purpose of this study is to explore the problem of time in Emmanuel Levinas. Levinas’s interest in time, temporality, and history was old, and he wrote about the theme from the beginning of his research and throughout his career. In Levinas’s thought, these are very difficult to understand, but they hold a very important position in his philosophy. Levinas investigated themes such as hypostasis, constitution of interiority, criticism of totality, exteriority, transcendence, alterity, infinity, face, face-to-face, ethical relation with the other, responsibility, dialogue, language, the saying and the said, proximity, eros, substitution, fecundity, maternity, diachrony, justice etc, on the basis of the concept of time. Time is deeply related to the above topics covering Levinas’s entire philosophy, and the concept of time is the basis on which these topics are thought and understood. The ethical and metaphysical dimensions that appear in his thinking may become clearer in the review of the time issue. Although it is difficult for us to find a clear theory of time in Levinas’s books written over several periods, we can extract a consistent structure of time from his thought. Unlike Hussar, Heidegger and Bergson, who had a considerable influence on Levinas’s philosophy of time, he has no single book describing the concept of time in a methodical way. However, if we identify the differences in thought for each period and reveal the relevance and meaning of the direction, we can achieve a relatively clear understanding of the theory of time in Levinas.
