This study explores whether listeners adjust their interpretation of prosodic boundaries according to the speaker. Participants listened to stories each consisting of several context sentences followed by a target sentence in which an adverbial phrase could modify either the main verb or the subordinate verb. The location of an intonational phrase boundary in the target sentence was manipulated along with the frequency of boundary use in context sentences. Listeners processed the target sentence differently depending on how frequently speakers had produced intonational phrase boundaries. The data suggest that the mapping between prosodic boundaries and the interpretation of an attachment ambiguity may be modulated by contextual knowledge about the speaker.
