This article is to examine Rachel’s motive for taking teraphim belonging to her father that Genesis 31:19 does not give explicit accounts in the Rachel-Laban Narrative Text and to seek theological function intended in Jacob-Easu Narrative Text through Rachel’s theft of teraphim. I conclude that Rachel’s theft of teraphim is to claim her property right from Laban and to inherit her son, Joseph a blessing to win in competition against her sister, Leah. Rachel’s behavior has an effect on re-creation of Jacob deceived his father and brother and acquired God’s blessing. The author of Genesis intends that God’s blessing is not activated nor accomplished by human intervention but by His own initiative through inserting the conflict narrative on the teraphim between Rachel and Laban before Genesis 32 and 35 tell the blessing bestowed upon Jacob. This is to be proved by the fact that Rachel died and was buried on the way to Bethlehem, while Leah was buried in the cave of Machpelah along with Abraham and Sarah, and by the reversed destiny that it is Judah Leah’s son, not Joseph Rachel’s son, who gains the blessing in the end.
