Osteoporosis is a major health problem in elderly women. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of green tea powder on bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats. Sprague-Dawley female rats weighing 200±5g were randomly assigned to Sham-control group (Sham), Ovx-control (Ovx-C), or Ovx-green tea powder (Ovx-GTP)group. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were estimated using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co,Wisconsin.) in spine and femur weeks after feeding. After six weeks, body weight gain and food efficiency ratio (FER)were significantly higher in the Ovx groups than in the Sham group regardless of diet. However, food intake was significantly higher in Ovx groups than in the Sham group. There were no significant differences in spine BMD and spine BMC. However, spine BMD per body weight and spine BMC per body weight were significantly lower in Ovx groups than in the Sham group. Further, there were no significant differences in femur BMD, femur BMC, and femur BMC per body weight. Femur BMD per body weight was significantly lower in the Ovx groups than in the Sham group. However, there was no significant difference due to experimental diet
