In this paper, I begin by scrutinizing the idea of modernity in the works of the three biggest figures of postcolonial studies—Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, and Homi Bhabha. I then ask how the ideas of modernity put forward by Said, Spivak, and Bhabha are different from those of Latin American writers represented by Enrique Dussel, Walter Mignolo, and Nelson MaldonadoTorres. While Said, Spivak, and Bhabha agree with the fact that modernity was established in the eighteenth century, Dussel, Mignolo, and Maldonado-Torres insist that the concept of modernity began in 1492 with the conquest of Latin America. To excavate coloniality, one must demonstrate a modernity that is constitutive of coloniality and that cannot exist without it. Indeed, to suppose that the Americas are the consequence of early European commercial expansion and the motor of capitalism, it is crucial to recognize modernity as a darker side of coloniality. Latin American Decolonial studies offer not only new ways of looking at the subaltern, but also of building new relations between the real subalterns and intellectuals who study the subaltern. This paper will expand our understanding of modernity/coloniality and contribute to the field of Latin American decolonial studies in Korea by examining the recent article written by Maldonado-Torres.
