Raw water was contaminated not only such as BOD, SS, bacteria, inflow of wastewater from upstream of river but also existence of Fe, Mn in ground water of river area. So to solve these problems biofiltration for pretreatment of raw water was studied with upflow biofilter. In this study, removal efficiency of BOD, SS, DOC and coliform was analyzed on filtration rates of 100m/d, 150m/d, 200m/d respectively. In this case, as filtration rate was 150m/day, effluent concentration of BOD, SS and Coliform represented 0.95mg/L, 5.35mg/L and 24.7MPN/100mL over 15 , which was satisfied with grade Ⅰ of water quality. Evaluating the biodegradation rate of the upflow biofilter using zeocarbon media, the results show that DOC is 0.198gDOC/kgZC·day. Nitrification rate was higher 1.2 times as much at 20 than at 3 , and lower 0.88 times as much than at 25 . The thermal coefficient of nitrification was 1.03 on the upflow biofilter. Moreover upflow biofilter can simultaneously remove iron and manganese under the applied experimental conditions. The effluent concentration of iron and manganese were always below the limit of 0.3mg/L.
