This paper investigates the online processing of Korean null and overt pronouns in the subject position in relation to their preference towards subject and object antecedents. Thirty-four native Korean speakers participated in a self-paced reading task, in which they read Korean sentences containing two kinds of pronouns - null and overt pronouns. We manipulated the type of pronoun (null vs. overt) in the subject position and whether the pronoun refers to the subject or the object antecedent of the preceding sentence. The results show that the null pronoun has a clear preference for the subject antecedent while the overt pronoun does not have a strong preference with regard to the position of the antecedent. This finding suggests that the referential preferences of Korean null and overt pronouns challenge the predictions of the Position of Antecedent Hypothesis (PAH; Carminati 2002), originally proposed for the behavior of Italian null and overt pronouns.
