Purpose: The objective of this study is to present the direction for composing the physical education elective subjects of high school by considering the current situation for composing the physical education elective subjects of high school for the enforcement of high school credit system and the revision of curriculum in 2022, and also drawing the implications.
Methods: For this, after selecting five teachers as the experts in curriculum, the contents were analyzed focusing on various cases following the curriculum and field application through in-depth and group interviews.
Results: As the difficulties of operating the physical education elective subjects, first, most of the physical education elective subjects for high school were operated as a subject ‘physical education’ mainly focusing on physical activities regardless of name, nature, and goal. Second, getting out of the purpose of high school elective subjects, they were operated not by student selection, but by school selection, which caused problems in the course of elective subjects. Third, there were too many overlapped contents between elective subjects, and the selection was limited, so the range of selection got narrowed. To improve them, first, the elective subjects should be developed by focusing on the coherency of name-nature-goal-operation showing the characteristics of each elective subject. Second, the diversity of elective subjects should be considered by increasing the number of physical education elective subjects to get prepared for the high school credit system, and also reducing the contents through concentration and selection. Third, it is necessary to restructuralize the elective subjects containing the educational meanings and balance of theories and physical activities for student competencies and admission to college.
Conclusion: In the 2022 revised curriculum, which will be revised in the future, physical education and elective courses should be developed to include various activities and contents in accordance with the purpose of the elective course.
