The pandemics of the Corona-19 virus have developed foreign and bewildering circumstances in relation to Church’s practice of faith. Such a reality challenges us to pose a question of what the proper cultic symbol would be which effectively communicates the divine presence. To face this challenge, this paper pays attention to the changes in the ritual symbols of Ancient Israel. A particular attention will be given to the statues of cherubim, the central cultic symbol of the Temple of Jerusalem in the monarchic period. I will examine the changes of their influential power as the central cultic symbol in accordance with socio-historical changes in the given society. The statues of cherubim, put in the holy of holies of the Temple, took up the role of the Ark, the older cultic symbol of Ancient Israel. But the cherubim were integrated with the Ark rather than replacing it. Furthermore, the new symbol, representing God who was seated on the cherubim, was legitimated by combining it with Yahweh’s old title, “Yahweh of the hosts.” The cherub figure is not a statue of God in itself, but a metonymic symbol representing God’s indwelling there. Following the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, which instituted the gold calf statues, the platform of Yahweh, as a central cultic symbol, the aniconic feature of the statues of cherubim became the theological background for aniconic religious reformations during the reigns of Hezekiah and Josiah. By the way, the constant threats of the Assyrian empire debilitated the royal authority and also called for a new theology to ensure the security of Zion. As a result, Zion was regarded as Yahweh’s residence and throne. This situation made the symbolic influence of the cherubim gradually weakened. The cherub figure eventually lost its symbolic power after the Jerusalem temple was destroyed by the Babylonian empire. This consideration of the religious history of Ancient Israel related to the statues of cherubim illustrates the fact that the influential power of a cultic symbol is susceptible to change and that the shifts of cultic symbols are interrelated to the socio-historical realities. As this study shows, however, the shifts of cultic symbols were not made to completely replace the previous symbol, but to promote integration with it, resulting in a richer symbolism.
