Purpose: The smoking rate of female workers in emotional labor has been reported to be as high as 40% in Korea. Methods: This study used a grounded theory approach to explore the smoking experiences of 20 Korean female workers aged 20~69 years who were engaged in emotional labor. Results: A total of 38 concepts, 14 subcategories grouped by similarities between concepts, and 10 categories were derived by abstracting the subcategories. Smoking among women in the studied age group was difficult to approach publicly due to social prejudice. Conversely, participants were easily approachable at the individual level. Participants ascribed different meanings(the stories behind smoking) to their smoking behavior. Given the conflict between the temptation to smoke and one’s conscience, the participants were “living just to get through each day” as they persisted in having an “on-and-off relationship with smoking.” Conclusion: This study is meaningful in that it developed a body of knowledge that can be used as basic data to intervene in the smoking continuation conditions of emotional labor female workers and to improve individual tendencies.
