The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among adult attachment (anxious attachment, avoidant attachment), social anxiety (interaction anxiety, performance anxiety) and mediating variable such as self-compassion. A total of 352 Korean undergraduate university students participated in this study. Participants completed demographic information and the following self-reported questionnaires: Experiences in Close Relationships Revised (ECR-R), Social Interactive Anxiety Scale (SIAS), Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and Korean Self-Compassion Scale (K-SCS). Only 334 students (121 males, 213 females) were chosen for data analysis. SPSS 18.0 and Mplus 6.0 statistical programs were used for performing the analysis. Additionally, bootstrapping analysis was conducted to verify significance. Results of this study are as follows. First, adult attachment (anxious attachment, avoidant attachment) correlated positively with social anxiety (interaction anxiety, performance anxiety). Second, self-compassion had negative correlations with adult attachment and social anxiety. Third, self-compassion partially mediated the relation between adult attachment and social anxiety. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study are discussed and the future research directions are suggested.
