This study was designed to examine the mediated moderation of job stress through autonomy in the relation between emotional labor and organizational commitment by focusing on protective function of autonomy. A total of 205 childcare teachers answered a questionnaire including measures of emotional labor, autonomy, job stress, and organizational commitment. These data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and SPSS Macro. The main results were as follows. First, job stress turned out to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between emotional labor and organizational commitment. Second, autonomy was found to have a moderating effect in terms of buffering the negative effect of emotional labor on job stress; whereas, the influence of job stress interacting with autonomy on organizational commitment was not significant. Third, the moderating effect of autonomy on job stress mediating the relationship between emotional labor and organizational commitment (the mediated moderation) was statistically significant. When a moderating effect is transmitted through a mediator, the effect is termed mediated moderation and the model is mediated moderator model. Lastly, the implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
