Today, many scholars and poets are talking about new evaluations and expectations about Bei Dao’s poems during exile. He breaks away from the image of a giant hero who cried out for the wounds of Cultural Revolution and the restoration of humanity at the forefront of the Chinese avant-garde, and transforms into a middle-aged writer expressing his elegant contemplation on everyday life. The ‘solitude’ and ‘nostalgia’ facing in an unfamiliar foreign land constantly raise questions about his identity. Therefore, new self-images ‘you’ and ‘he’ appear in the period of exile, revealing more introspective and implicitly one’s real situation and inner feelings. This is a concrete poetic expression of the change in the poet’s ‘self-awareness’, showing that he cares about the preciousness and sacredness of ordinary daily life. These poems quietly describe the trivial daily experiences and realizations, the identity of a wanderer, and the fragility of life.
The mirror is an important image that frequently appears in Bei Dao’s poems during exile, and it is also a path through which he reflects on his self. The mirror is like a heterotopia for him, so when he looks at his reflection in the mirror, he realizes that he is now in a place where he is not. Looking at the self reflected in the abyss of the mirror, that is, in a heterotopia, he begin to correct the real him. The real selves such as the pain of bondage wandering abroad, the instability and homesickness of life, the plight of the mother tongue, and the memories and remorse of the past, are constantly competing with the heterotopia in the mirror and trying to defeat each other through the game of writing. This writing game is closely related to the poetic consciousness he pursues in terms of form as well as the process of building his own identity.
