The purpose of this study was to investigate whether social isolation plays a mediating role in the relationship between adolescents’ reactive aggression and loneliness, and to examine whether perceived school climate moderates such a mediating effect. For this purpose, data were collected by conducting a self-report survey that measured research variables from 822 high school students in B and U metropolitan cities and G province in Korea. Major findings are as follows: First, there were positive correlations among reactive aggression, social isolation, and loneliness, and school climate had negative correlations with reactive aggression, social isolation, and loneliness. Second, social isolation partially mediated the relationship between reactive aggression and loneliness. Third, the moderating role of perceived school climate in the relationship between social isolation and loneliness was significant, indicating that the more positively school climate was perceived, the lesser the likelihood that social isolation would lead to loneliness. Fourth, in the relationship between reactive aggression and loneliness, the mediating role of social isolation was found to be less significant as the school climate was positively perceived, which supports the validity of the moderated mediation model of school climate. Our findings not only contribute to the understanding of a psychological mechanism by which adolescents with high reactive aggression experience loneliness through social isolation, but also suggests that systematic and multifaceted interventions are needed to alleviate loneliness by enhancing a positive school climate. Based on the results, the significance and limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
