Literary paintings(文人畵) and Four Gracious Plants Paintings express the literary spirit and nature of artist, as an art expresses the artist’s sentiments based on the things’ content and spirit rather than form. When the painting style of holding artistic flavor which was the description of the inner world of heart rather than the copy to seek for elaboration, was rising into power, those paintings should express the literary heart, poetical feelings, and also artistic intention through the artists describe their feelings of brush and ink into sentiments.
In the paintings of Four Gracious Plants, plums come into flowers firstly risking the intense cold of spring, orchids diffuse the subtle fragrance of summer widely, chrysanthemums overcome the first cold of the year in late autumn, and bamboos have green leaves during the winter. The peculiar characters of those four plants are compared to the personality of learned men. That means the artist’s paintings show his own status and the status is his own character at the same time.
In the last Joseon period, as Kim, Jeong-hee (金正喜, 1786~1856) who combined the literature·calligraphy·painting·epigraphy, built up a well -matched composite art world of poetry·calligraphy·painting· engraving(詩·書·畵·印), the ink paintings of Joseon period based on the Neo-Confucianism can be called the Confucian ideal world that realized the humanity of Heaven-Earth-Human into the literature through the beauty of consonance with nature (意境美), the beauty of space (餘白美), the beauty of neutralization (中和美), and the beauty of personality (人格美) in poetry·calligraphy·paintings.
