This article attempts to examine the current literary scene in Russia through the novel Zuleikha opens her eyes by Guzel" Yakhina, a Tatar writer who has attracted great attention since its publication in 2015. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian literature has been transformed under the capitalist system over the past 30 years. In this process, the literary debate between high literature and popular literature has always been an important issue. Yakhina"s debut novel Zuleikha opens her eyes also could not avoid this controversy. And the heated debate about the novel, which became the best-selling novel in Russia in 2020, is not cooling down. What is the reason for the attention paid to this novel, which deals with a melodramatic story in a well-known Soviet labor camp? What is the basis for controversial reviews of the novel by critics and social media readers? This paper tries to answer to these questions, explore the aesthetic value of the novel, and further draw the landscape of contemporary Russian literary field.
