본 연구에서는 상수원에서 곰팡이와 흙냄새를 유발하는 geosmin과 2-MIB 생성 방선균의 분포를 파악하고자 북한강수계의 환경유전자를 대상으로 방선균 특이 primer를 사용하여 geosmin과 2-MIB 합성 방선균의 잠재성과 발현량을 확인하였다. 북한강 수계 내 방선균은 수층에서 1.04~1.79 × 10⁴ copies/ml의 농도로 나타났으며, 퇴적층의 경우, 2.9 × 10³~4 × 10<SUP>15</SUP> copies/g의 농도로 나타났다. 북한강 수계 수층과 퇴적층내 방선균유래 이취미물질 합성 유전자를 정량한 결과, 1.05~3.98 × 10<SUP>13</SUP> copies/ml (g)로 확인되었으며, 이취미 물질 합성유전자의 발현량은 0.21~2.67 × 10<SUP>8</SUP> copies/ml (g)으로 확인되었다. 북한강 수계의 방선균 copy 수는 퇴적층이 수층보다 약 10²~10<SUP>14</SUP>배 더 높게 검출되었다.
