Because of the high variability of solar irradiance, which is largely driven by cloud movements, a building"s window controller is difficult to operate effectively. The cloud information such as cloud cover (CC), cloud fraction, or cloud amount does not represent the solar irradiance correctly because the cloud that conceals the sun rapidly varies at short time intervals. Therefore, in this study, the sun-blocking index (SBI) is proposed as a new parameter to estimate solar irradiance. The SBI is calculated by considering the number of cloud pixels around the sun disk on sky images. After establishing the correlation between the clearness index and SBI, the SBI-dependent clearness index is applied to solar radiation models. The estimation of the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) provides small errors with relative root mean square error (rRMSE) and relative mean bias error (rMBE) of 16.21% and −0.27%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed model also exhibited good performance for decomposition models with rRMSE of estimation direct normal irradiance (DNI) less than 32%, outperforming the conventional model (using measured clearness index).
