Against the backdrop of a growing sense of crisis in relation to climate change and the Earth’s ecological limitations, this study examines the formation of urban communities specifically built to solve these aforementioned problems autonomically, and the factors affecting these efforts.
Specifically, it examines Seoul’s 7 transition towns (TTs), which have continued their activities for at least one year after the end of government support and a combination of qualitative(case study) and quantitative(social network analysis) methods was used.
As a result of the study, shared spaces and networks were created in TTs. In addition the leadership of the representatives was being exercised and there was mutual cooperation among the residents. The residents of TTs considered the village to which they belonged as an intimate and trustworthy place.
Based on the results, we propose the following implications and suggestions regarding the formation and spread of the local community in response to urban crises. First, Local community activation implies the expansion of relationships and the diversification of key individuals in the networks. Second, the activated local community impacts the existing regime and becomes “the soil” that not only forms the main agent but also nurtures it. Third, local community serves as a foundation for supporting the TT movement and affirms achievements. Fourth, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of the local community to promote an affinity network for building trust among residents.
