There is a yawning abyss between what proponents of post-Marxism have achieved and their adamant belief in the theory. Laclau’s discursive-formalistic theorization of populism and Mouffe’s left populist strategy cannot be employed as even tentative tactics, let alone as weapons of permanent revolution for liberation. Discursive devices supporting the theory of Populist Reason claim to say everything but in fact cannot say anything. Its formalistic theorizations of the structure of political articulation, its ambiguity about ethical-political orientation and the futile consequence of an anti-essentialist subjectivation strategy, its ahistorical concept of hegemony and its conservative implications, and its frequent confusion between transformation as such and leadership, reveal Populist Reason’s vanity as a theory of liberation as well as its fatal weakness as a political strategy. Populism involves many elements obstructing democratic experiments that aim to go beyond liberal democracy. By hindering the second and third constituent actions, the logic of Populism functions as a restraining tactic, which hampers the evolution of the people into the multitude. Just like liberalism, populism is an object for revolutionaries to overcome rather than accommodate.
