The purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of Korean populism. In particular, the causality between populism and economic-political crisis was empirically analyzed, focusing on the trend of populism that emerged from the Kim Dae-jung administration through to the Moon Jae-in administration (1998.03.01-2019.09.30). Populism was defined as the popularism of political parties and elites in the political process. The data were collected through newspaper articles about “populism”, objective and subjective economic indicators, Presidential approval ratings, and election results. This analysis utilized the regression method of an autoregressive error model.
According to the results of the analysis, the populism increased when the economic growth rate and the approval rate of the president decreased. Also, before the election and when the main opposing party had less seats than the ruling party, the populism increased, too.
