Libai is the greatest poet in Chinese history. He was a locational figure who constantly challenged to become a high official even if he failed, though Libai’s life was not that successful in a strict sense. Libai struggled with loneliness and sorrow about he could not achieve his dream. However, he is a representative poet of The glorious age of the Tang Dynasty, who perfectly embodied its spirit by writing romantic and magnanimous poems. 2nd year of Qianyuan (759), when Libai was 59 years old, the exile to Yelang was pardoned. After being absolved, Libai went to Yuezhou and took a break during autumn. He spent time with those in similar situations, rambling in Dongting Lake and climbing the Baling and Yueyang Tower. The first thing he felt in Dongting Lake was a sense of freedom. When he thought that the ideal of ‘retire after winning merit’ was frustrated and there was no longer a retreat, he met Dongting Lake. It was a distant and vast space full of clear autumn light. Dongting Lake seemed able to achieve unworldliness as its natural scenery. But with people such as Peiyin, Jiazhi, and Liye, Libai could accomplish even more than just separating from the world, reaching to ‘carpe diem’. However, Libai had a contradictory orientation of ‘become an official’ and ‘live in seclusion’. So, looking at Dongting Lake from the Yuezhou, he recalled the dream of serving his country with unreserved loyalty again. Watching naval forces in the lake, who were training to suppress rebel forces in Xiangzhou, Libai sometimes resolved not to live a life of the hermit as Tao Yuanming, and sometimes he imagined attending the ceremony and going around the battlefield together with them. However, in the end, lamenting his position as a wild goose rests its wings for a while on the sands of Dongting Lake, Libai only shed tears, thinking about past time and boundless future. Dongting Lake, which Libai visited after being pardoned, was a space that reflected the contradictory orientation of ‘become an official’ and ‘live in seclusion’ that he pursued throughout his life. While the Dongting Lake was a space that separated him from the world, it was a space at which his remaining dream of becoming a high official emerged impliedly.
