Poetry is regarded as the essence of literature, occupying the center of humanistic tradition across the globe. Nevertheless, few studies have considered Oriental and Western poetry together. This paper compares and analyzes poems in the romantic tradition of China and England, focusing on LiBai and William Wordsworth for a better understanding of the concept of poetry in the two cultures. First, we examine the different or similar notion of “the romantic” in China and England. Next, we analyze respectively the poems of LiBai in terms of imagination, unworldliness, and grandiloquence and the poems of Wordsworth in terms of organic nature, imagination, and lyricism. Thus, we point out in the Chinese and the English romantic poems not just similarities, but dissimilarities induced by the fact that romanticism was a historical event in England, while the romantic is an intrinsic element in traditional Chinese poetry.
