This study provides new empirical data of loanwords in Tatar, an under-studied Turkic language. The loanword data collected from two native Tatar speakers show that a phonological modification, vowel epenthesis, often occurs in Tatar, because the two main source languages, Russian and Arabic, involve a variety of consonant clusters, while Tatar does not allow clusters in word-initial and word-final positions. It is also shown that the site of epenthesis differs primarily by the type of cluster and the source language. In Russian loanwords, borrowed recently, the epenthesis occurs in the word-internal or external position where intensity rises, since it results in a less prominent change from the original cluster. In Arabic loanwords, borrowed earlier, internal epenthesis consistently appears in word-final clusters as a result of the diachronic change to fit the native Tatar phonology.
