Various suffix forms have often been studied with a focus on non-suppletive phonologically derived allomorphs. For example, the English plural suffix /z/ is realized as [s] after voiceless non-sibilant consonants, [əz] after sibilants, and [z] elsewhere. Likewise, one might claim that the English diminutives pæti and pætsi (written as 〈Patty〉 and 〈Patsy〉) ‘Patricia’, for instance, are in suffixal allomorphy between –i and –si. However, this paper argues against the allomorphic approach by showing that it does not explain the muddled phonological distribution between –i and –si when it comes to English diminutives. Results of a corpus study show an overlap and free variation: the occurrence of pæti does not block that of pætsi, and vice versa. This paper argues for an epenthetic approach. That is, -i is the default English diminutive suffix, and /s/ is optionally epenthesized in order to mark a morpheme boundary between a stem (e.g., pæt) and the default suffix –i (i.e., pæt |s|i). Evidence for the optional and stylistic nature of this type of consonant epenthesis is also found in other languages, as in hypercorrective [s]-epenthesis in Dominican Spanish. By addressing the similarity between the phenomena in two different languages, this study provides a novel approach to consonant epenthesis that has been understudied and problematic in phonology.
