The novel A Certain Woman (或る女, Aru Onna) written by Takeo Arishima is a story of a woman who became aware of herself and bet everything on love—which can be defined as “Pair Fantasy”, a concept coined by Takaaki Yoshimoto—which led her to destruction. This dissertation started from a simple question: Why the heroine Yoko was eventually led to destruction? Since this novel is considered as one of the most representative Japanese realist novels, her destruction is related to social conventions. However, if we focus on the narrative of the story, the direct cause of the suffering and destruction of Yoko should rather be found from her inner pursuit of the “Pair Fantasy” than social restrictions. Hidden in the inner side of Yoko pursuing the Pair Fantasy is desire, distrust, and excessive sexuality, and it is the distrust which affects the other two elements. Due to her desire and distrust, Yoko did not stop Kurachi from committing an anti-state crime after being dismissed. Yoko even did not hesitate to show immoral decadence, deluding Kimura. The true nature of the novel is rather ‘a specific internal realism’ overwhelming the external one than ‘a balance of internal and external realism.’ Another characteristic of Yoko’s tragedy is the fact that Yoko perceives her problems as her ‘destiny’ except her excessive sexuality. However, she cannot end her tragedy as long as she does not fight herself against her destiny even if she will survive the surgery. In this aspect, Yoko exhibits an excellent contrast to Effi, the heroine of Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane—the latter reached a reconciliation after experiencing misfortune from adultery. In the future, I intend to explore and compare different realist novels describing women’s adultery.
