Little empirical research exists regarding the relationship between law enforcement organizational characteristics and cybercrime response. The purpose of this research is to use Maguire’s theory of police organizational structure to investigate whether specialized cybercrime police units are related to higher numbers of cybercrime arrests in the United States. Data from this study was derived from multiple years of the Law Enforcement Management and Statistics (LEMAS) survey (2000, 2007, and 2013). The results suggest that states with greater use of cybercrime specialized units are more likely to efficiently address cybercrime offenses. In contrast, the findings indicate that there is no relationship between the unemployment rate and cybercrime offenses. Lastly, the practical and theoretical implications of these results are discussed, as well as the limitations of this research and promising future research directions.
